Doctors Without Borders and Treatment Action Campaign are urging South African leaders to allow compulsory licensing of patented drugs. South African officials are reviewing intellectual property laws with officials from the World Health Organization and the World Trade Organization. The advocacy groups said South Africa should limit the number of drug patents granted and ensure that all patent applications are scrutinized, implement rules that prevent "evergreening," enhance transparency, allow more organizations to challenge patents, and make it easier to issue compulsory licenses.
