App.net, a social network intended as an ad-free alternative to Facebook and Twitter, is a year old, and while its user numbers won't cause Mark Zuckerberg to lose much sleep, the network has been pretty successful. Founder Dalton Caldwell has won over developers by offering plenty of support, including a range of APIs and $30,000 in monthly payouts based on user feedback. "We are just getting started," Caldwell says.
