State and local health departments have received a total of almost $76 million from the CDC to help them fortify their core laboratory and epidemiology capacity to improve their ability to monitor and address public health threats such as infectious disease outbreaks. The money will support more than 1,000 full- and part-time positions in health departments at the state, local, territorial and tribal levels, including epidemiologists and health information systems staff.
