The HHS Office of Inspector General is conducting a five-state investigation into the use of antipsychotic drugs by Medicaid-covered youths aged 17 and younger. A threefold increase was seen from 1999 to 2008 in the number of Medicaid recipients younger than 20 who received prescriptions for antipsychotics, Mathematica Policy Research has reported. The probe aims to "determine whether these prescriptions were medically indicated, and whether taxpayers were being billed for inappropriate, poor-quality care," Inspector General Daniel Levinson said.
