Aviation expert and historian John Brown has challenged whether the Wright Brothers were the first to fly an aircraft. During a recent talk in Bridgeport, Conn., Brown said the honor belongs to Gustave Whitehead, a German immigrant to the state who in 1901 had flown an aircraft more than two years before the Wrights. Brown urged local residents to look in their attics and basements for evidence their elders might kept such as diaries that could be used to bolster his claims and convince the Smithsonian Institution to recognize Whitehead as the first in flight.
