The Yucca Mountain project in Nevada is the official and designated site for the repository of the country's used nuclear fuel, House Republicans said, criticizing proposals in the Senate to assess storage alternatives. "[The Department of Energy's] new waste strategy very much represents the administration's effort to start from scratch as if the Nuclear Waste Policy Act doesn't exist," said Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill. The Nevada site is the "clear answer" as it could be finished faster than interim storage sites, added Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich.
