Some schools successfully have turned around poor performance by challenging students and adopting deeper learning, writes Tom Vander Ark, an education advocate, adviser and author. In this blog post, he shares some examples, including a middle school in Kentucky that has made significant progress under a project-based learning model. Another turnaround effort succeeded in Clark County, Nev., Vander Ark writes, because of a model based on science, technology, engineering, arts and math -- or STEAM -- that tapped into students' passions.
