The 11-plus-mile Gardiner Expressway in Toronto needs a decade of repairs costing a half-billion dollars. Some suggest demolishing it or replacing it with a tunnel, also very expensive. Architect Les Klein proposes building individual bridges, covered with vegetation, over a good portion of it, much like wrapping the roadway in a "Green Ribbon." He says the bridges would act as roofs and protect the highway from the elements, and their greenery could be used as parkland, trails and space for cafes and small shops.
