Nearly 17% of all surgical site infections following total knee and total hip replacements might not have been caught if postoperative infection surveillance was restricted to the index hospital, according to a study in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. The findings "suggest the need to support further research to evaluate the use of large administrative data repositories that allow tracking of health care encounters for specific patients across multiple health care facilities," the study's lead author said.
