Intel will this month begin shipping a multimode Long-Term Evolution processor, believing the technology is perfect to enable the chipmaker to make inroads in the U.S. smartphone market, a company executive said. The XMM 7160 has been qualified with AT&T and Verizon, according to an analyst. Meanwhile, Intel is expected to announce next month that it is fast-tracking development of its Atom processors with 14-nanometer dimensions in order to get the more power-efficient chips into the smartphone market much sooner.
