A key manufacturing index for the U.S. mid-Atlantic region remains positive in August, the third month of gains. The manufacturing sector is not seeing "super-strong growth, but it's not contracting. It's modest," said Bank of America economist Josh Dennerlein. The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia's general economic index of 9.3, however, is down from a two-year high of 19.8 in July.
