Demodex and sarcoptes are two types of mange mites that affect dogs, according to veterinarian Gary Thompson. Demodectic mange is not transmissible to other dogs or people, but sarcoptic mange can be passed between dogs, and people can acquire the mites from dogs. Demodectic mange is generally easier to detect than sarcoptic mange, Dr. Thompson said. Demodex, a mite normally found in low numbers in hair follicles, becomes a problem when the patient's immune system is compromised in some way, such as with another health problem or an immature immune system, but it generally responds well to treatment, Dr. Thompson explained.
