School nutrition professionals in the Los Angeles Unified School District found that exotic menu items rolled out in 2011 were not popular with students. They are hoping to increase participation in school meals by returning to the basics and serving more familiar dishes, such as enchiladas, lasagna, beef sliders and a breakfast fruit puff designed by a high-school sophomore. The district also plans to expand breakfast in the classroom but will eliminate cereal, which teachers said was too messy.
