The University of Maryland Eastern Shore has invested in bulletproof whiteboards to improve campus safety. The boards, measuring 18 by 20 inches, can cover a teacher's head and torso in the event of an emergency. UMES is the first college to buy the boards, though about 100 K-12 schools have bought them. "This was not done to convey any sense of un-safety by the university or anything, to suggest that we expect any kind of event, but it's in response to a national issue," university president Juliette B. Bell said.
