A House measure sponsored by Rep. Mike Burgess, R-Texas, would make permanent Medicare's coverage of anti-rejection drugs for kidney transplant patients. Medicare currently covers only three years' worth of the drugs, which are needed for life. The cost of approximately 10 more years of immunosuppressive treatments would be $150,000, but that would be cost-effective compared with a lifetime of dialysis treatments, according to an official with Legacy Transplant Services in Portland, Ore.
