Pharmacy benefit management tools such as mail-service pharmacy and preferred pharmacy networks are in demand by employers because studies have shown commercial plan sponsors and their members could save $360 billion over a decade if such tools were universally adopted, writes Pharmaceutical Care Management Association President and CEO Mark Merritt. "Innovative tools created and used by PBMs in employer health plans across the country to manage drug costs ensure that prescribed drugs are appropriate, medically necessary and they save money," Merritt writes. Moreover, employers and employees oppose special-interest efforts championed by the drugstore lobby to restrict the use of money-saving tools, Merritt notes.
