Patients with impaired glucose tolerance who underwent metformin therapy or followed a low-fat diet and exercise program attained significant reductions in bad cholesterol particles and increased levels of good cholesterol, a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism revealed. "Our findings demonstrate that the same therapies used to slow the onset of diabetes also may help allay the risk of heart disease," said researcher Dr. Ronald Goldberg.
