Microsoft reportedly is seeking to raise its profile in the mobile and social media arenas by considering taking a stake in Foursquare Labs but will have to beat out American Express and other companies that also want to invest in the location-based service, according to published reports. Separately at Foursquare, the company said it would introduce an upgraded service designed to "sense" where users are located and automatically provide recommendations without having to open the app and "check-in" with their location.
