Over the past six years, the "Southwest effect" on lowering airfares has lessened, according to a MIT study. JetBlue Airways and other low-cost carriers now have more of an effect than Southwest Airlines when they enter a market. Southwest spokeswoman Michelle Agnew said the carrier has raised fares in 2013 because "of the fluctuating costs in our industry, fuel being a large contributing factor."
