NASA's plan to land astronauts on an asteroid to investigate it for possible mining and learn how to protect Earth from the space rocks is the space agency's latest effort to achieve big goals with an increasingly limited budget. The asteroid mission also is seen as a steppingstone to landing humans on Mars and as an effort to create new vigor in its human spaceflight program, a program that has stalled since the glory days of Apollo.
