New technology that allows fuel cells on ships to run virtually silent is one of the factors that have made the cells ready for use in the Navy, according to Don Hoffman, a program officer in the Office of Naval Research. "Fuel cells are real and are ready for transition to our warfighters," Hoffman says. "We're pushing forward to examine adapting this technology for use aboard ships as well." The technology converts fossil fuels into a gas capable of being used by the fuel cell.
