Residents at long-term care facilities nationwide are suffering from cavities, gum disease and cracked teeth, despite laws requiring staff to help residents brush their teeth. Poor oral health may contribute to pneumonia, which is the leading cause of death in nursing home residents. Some residents resist having their teeth brushed, staff are often poorly prepared to provide dental care and families might not be able to afford care from a hygienist.
