The River Dell Regional School District in River Edge, N.J., hosted its first summer program aimed at helping students with disabilities transition from middle school to high school. Superintendent of Schools Patrick Fletcher said the program helps students build social skills and make contacts before the beginning of the school year. "In one instance, there was one child that was completely non-verbal, but at the end of the process was engaging at least in a rudimentary kind of conversation," he said.
