A federally commissioned report determined that 9% of methane produced from Uintah Basin drilling operations in Utah is emitted into the atmosphere. The American Petroleum Institute has not assessed the study, spokesman Brian Straessle said, but there are other reports that peg methane emissions at less than 2%. Drillers "have every incentive to capture emissions so they can sell more of the natural gas they extract instead of losing some to the atmosphere," Straessle added.
