The number of underrepresented minority faculty teaching science, technology, engineering and math has remained flat over the past 20 years, according to data from the National Science Foundation. As the number of women in STEM faculty positions has grown 25% during that same period, the percentage of minority faculty has remained slightly more than 5%. Some possible reasons include a weak K-12 pipeline, a general lack of jobs in academia, and more attractive opportunities in the private sector.
