Roof replacement work underway at the historic Appomattox Manor in Hopewell, Va., is employing newer technologies to ensure a long life span for the roof. The project will use a rubber membrane underneath the shingles to protect against water damage and mesh material to allow proper movement of air underneath roofing materials, said David Beaver, facility manager at Petersburg National Battlefield. The work also entails hand-cutting wooden shingles to fit the structure and maintain the building's original appearance.
