Married same-sex couples will be treated the same as heterosexual counterparts under the U.S. tax code regardless of where they live, the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced Thursday. The change "assures legally married same-sex couples that they can move freely throughout the country knowing that their federal filing status will not change," Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said. The new policy does not apply to couples in domestic partnerships or civil unions.
