The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs is eying Bitcoin and other virtual currencies. According to a letter sent to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, the committee perceives value to entrepreneurs and investors, but adds "their near anonymous and decentralized nature has also attracted criminals who value few things more than being allowed to operate in the shadows." Committee chairman Thomas Carper, D-Del., and Tom Coburn, R-Okla., backed the effort to find "a sensible regulatory framework" governing virtual currency.
