A joint motion for severance was filed by criminal defendants Michael and Stewart Parnell requesting separate trials for federal felony charges concerning their time managing Peanut Corp. of America. The severance motion was made because the brothers' defenses "are antagonistic and mutually exclusive." "If the jury, in order to believe the core of the testimony offered on behalf of that defendant, must necessarily disbelieve the testimony offered on behalf of his co-defendant, severance is compelled," the attorneys for the two brothers wrote.
