European physicians say anesthesiologists should have a bigger say in determining death in ICU and emergency department patients to improve organ transplant rates, an idea that sparks discussions about the lack of standard guidelines to define death in the U.S. and elsewhere. Dr. Noam Stadlan of NorthShore University HealthSystem in Illinois said individual hospitals also can have their own criteria, so an international discussion and an attempt to reach a consensus would be helpful.
