Babies whose mothers were made to listen repeatedly to a pseudoword beginning from the 29th week of gestation until birth showed increased brain activity when they heard the word again after birth, Finnish researchers found. Compared with babies who were not exposed to the repeated word, these babies "were able to process the word better, and also they were able to detect changes in the word better," study author Minna Huotilainen said. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
