A diet that includes foods containing the amino acid leucine and omega-3 fatty acids may help newly diagnosed patients with type 1 diabetes maintain some insulin production, reducing their insulin requirements, according to researchers at the University of North Carolina. The study in the journal Diabetes Care included data from more than 1,300 people with type 1 diabetes, and found that after two years, leucine and omega-3 fatty acids were associated with higher C-peptide levels, which can help improve glucose control.
