Researchers looked at data on more than 77,000 obese patients in Sweden and found that those who had undergone bariatric surgery faced a significantly greater risk of colorectal cancer. The link was seen in all three bariatric procedures: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding and vertical banded gastroplasty, researchers reported in the Annals of Surgery. A possible explanation could be malabsorption effects of the procedure that cause local mucosal change, researchers wrote.
