Tokyo Electric Power is seeking to learn radioactive waste treatment techniques at the Hanford site in Washington state and has deployed engineers there. In addition to waste treatment, Hanford has expertise in concrete cocooning, a technique for sealing off reactors. "The U.S. has vast experience in nuclear technology with their military activity, including decontaminating soil and managing river contamination," said Masumi Ishikawa, general manager of TEPCO's radioactive waste management.
