NYSE Liffe says volume has increased across several key contracts. Officials cite mostly swaps-to-futures migration, though they say transaction clearing through a central counterparty also has played a part.
A little-noticed side deal might discourage bidders from competing with IntercontinentalExchange's offer to take over NYSE Euronext. The two agreed that NYSE Euronext's European derivatives unit, Liffe, would use ICE to clear trades for at least two years, people familiar with the contract said.
NYSE Euronext has faced a series of technical difficulties over the past week. The latest issue forced the exchange operator to halt trading on its CAC-40 index in Paris. Last week, NYSE Euronext said it was "taking necessary measures to avoid a recurrence of this issue."
Investors increased trading of Paris milling-wheat, coffee, rapeseed and corn futures to drive commodity-derivatives trading to a record high last year on NYSE Liffe. Volume surged 37% to 16.7 million contracts, according to NYSE Euronext. The previous record of 13.2 million was reached in 2008.
