Solta Medical's Liposonix body contouring device ablates fat and thickens collagen in the midlamellar matrix using high-intensity, focused ultrasound, but it will not give desired results in patients who have more than three centimeters of superficial fat around the waist, says plastic surgeon Mark Jewell, an assistant clinical professor of plastic surgery at Oregon Health and Science University. The device works best in patients who have a centimeter of fat beyond the focal depth, which can be determined with a high-resolution diagnostic ultrasound device, Jewell said.
