A recently released court ruling from 2011 shows that the government engaged in unlawful surveillance. The ruling, which was previously secret, came from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. "The court is troubled that the government's revelation regarding [the National Security Agency's] acquisition of Internet transactions mark the third instance in less than three years in which the government has disclosed a substantial misrepresentation regarding the scope of a major collection program," wrote U.S. District Judge John Bates, who presided over the court at the time.
