U.S. Census Bureau data show a sharp increase in the number of people speaking a foreign language at home. In 2011, about 60.6 million people spoke a foreign language at home, up from 23 million in 1980. English and Spanish are used most often, and Chinese is the third most used language at home. Use of other languages, such as Vietnamese, Russian and Persian, also has increased, while use of European languages, such as Italian, German and French, has declined.
