Higher survival rates, multiple injuries, longer tours of duty and the cost of streamlining Department of Veterans Affairs operations are expected to add up to higher medical costs for decades for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. A 2012 Military Medicine report noted that patients with polytraumatic injuries could need decades of rehabilitation, which increases medical costs, as do the related medical conditions that often follow initial injuries. Lifetime care costs for post-9/11 service members have not been tabulated.
