Startups that amass huge user bases in short time spans don't necessarily achieve long-lasting success, writes Alyson Shontell. In some cases, these companies may use hefty discounts or other tactics to attract business while losing money. Other fast-growing startups may depend too heavily on one source of traffic -- Facebook, for example -- and flounder after business conditions change.
