Data from the 2009 Kids' Inpatient Database including more than 3.4 million children and teens revealed that nearly a quarter of those treated for trauma had pre-existing chronic problems. These pediatric trauma patients had increased mortality rates, lengthier hospital stays and higher hospital costs compared with patients without pre-existing chronic conditions. The findings appear in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery.
