Both freight carload traffic and intermodal volume of U.S. railroads continued their upward trend, according to the Association of American Railroads. Rail carloads increased 1.5% in the week ending Sept. 14 year-on-year, and intermodal climbed 4.9%. Of the 10 carload categories, seven posted increases -- led by motor vehicles and parts, and petroleum and petroleum products each posting a 14.4% rise. Overall U.S. traffic in the latest week rose 3.1% compared to the year-ago level, AAR noted.
