A letter published in the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal Star contained several misleading statements about ethanol, writes Todd Brodersen, a petroleum marketer in Nebraska. The Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit ended nearly two years ago, but oil industry subsidies going back 100 years are still going strong and will amount to about $5 billion this year, Brodersen states. During the past 25 years, motorists in Nebraska have traveled more than 220 billion miles on ethanol blends without any problem traced to the biofuel, Brodersen writes.
