U.S. oil and natural gas companies between 2000 and 2012 invested about $81 billion on technologies to curb greenhouse-gas emissions, while the federal government spent $80 billion in the same period, an American Petroleum Institute-commissioned study found. This shows the "often unheralded" efforts by the industry to reduce emissions, said Jack Gerard, API's president and CEO. The industry's investments in alternative energy and efficiency were also touted by Gerard.
