Research has indicated that running may not increase the risk of knee osteoarthritis, and a study from Queen's University in Ontario found the reason is linked to a runner's stride. The study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise showed that runners have longer strides than walkers, requiring fewer steps to cover the same distance, and they put pressure on knee joints for a shorter period of time so the net effect is similar to walking.
McDonald's said it will offer fruit, salads and vegetables instead of fries in its value meals. The fast-food giant is working with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, and says that as part of that commitment, it will advertise only water, milk and juice for Happy Meals for children.
Survey data from a California program that provides nutrition education to low-income residents who use a food bank found that 46% of people in an intervention group used the help to prepare more vegetables, compared with 10% of a control group that did not get the assistance. The intervention group also was more likely to ensure their family ate foods in all five food groups daily. "Providing fresh fruits and vegetables is just one part of the equation. You also have to make sure people know why they should be eating it and different ways to prepare it," said registered dietitian Janet Leader of Second Harvest Food Bank.
Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market expanded private label fresh&easy by nearly 100 items for the holidays, including prepared products such as eggnog gelato, organic gingerbread-flavored ground coffee, pumpkin bisque and apple-cranberry stuffing. "We heard from customers that they wanted more festive and exclusive fresh&easy products this holiday season," said an executive with the 184-store chain.
