Tech firms are trying to speed up product cycles to stay ahead of rivals and to persuade customers to upgrade more often. That might backfire, experts say, since it leads companies to offer only incremental improvements instead of the sweeping changes customers actually want. "The tablet, smartphone and PC all have functionality limitations, and consumers find shortcomings with all of them," says Wharton School professor Andrea Matwyshyn.
