A study found seven of 13 strains of Acinetobacter bacteria that developed a resistance to the disinfectant Trigene also had a cross-resistance to the last-resort treatment polymyxin, researchers reported at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. Other studies have shown traditional cleaning practices may not kill all Acinetobacter, a common hospital bacteria, but bathing patients in chlorhexidine or using ultraviolet light in hospital rooms can help protect patients.
