Acacia makes its money from innovation -- not by conducting R&D, but rather by acquiring patents and using litigation, or the threat thereof, to force companies into licensing deals. The company's 275 patents helped generate $200 million in revenue during the past year. Acacia's activities have given rise to a rival, RPX, which preemptively acquires patents that might help shield clients from Acacia's activities.
