The CDC and health officials from New York City write in the American Journal of Hypertension that they are sticking with their goal of getting Americans to consume less salt after an Institute of Medicine report four months ago found that reducing intake to the lowest recommended levels would not improve health and could cause harm. Heart risks appear to rise at both the low and high ends of sodium intake, said Editor-in-Chief Michael Alderman of the journal. Americans eat so much salt now, that health, government and media leaders share a responsibility to encourage reductions, New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Farley and others wrote in the journal.
