A study from Poland found some patients with stage IV rectal cancer and unresectable metastases benefited from palliative radiation and chemotherapy. Patients in the study were symptomatic but did not have complete bowel obstructions. Dr. Christopher Mantyh at Duke University Medical Center commented many hospitals use chemoradiation first to reduce the tumor load and symptoms, as well as possibly render the metastatic disease resectable through surgery.
